On the lower Happy Lake Ridge Trail, facing east across the [[Elwha River]] valley toward [[Hurricane Hill]. This part of the trail is typical of southeast Ridge, with scattered medium-sized but old-looking [[Douglas Fire]] amoung dense stands of small Doug Fir that are either stunted, or filled-in formerly semi-open forest. This pattern might arise from climate change, or from former Native American managed-burning, which maintained better game and berry-picking.
